Step-by-step installation guide covering the proper adhesive application, trim fitting, filling, and dark-tint finishing techniques for acoustical plaster.
Getting the right coverage from BASWA Trim and BASWA Pre-Fill materials is not just about technique. It is about understanding how each step in the trim installation sequence directly affects material yield, finish quality, and long-term system performance. Rushing or deviating from these guidelines is one of the most avoidable sources of material waste and warranty issues on a BASWA Phon installation.
Before installation begins, your BASWA acoustic Contractor Sales representative will calculate recommended material quantities based on your project drawings, total square footage, and the linear footage of trims specified. These recommendations are based on proper installation technique. If guidelines are not followed, your actual yield will differ from the projected yield, potentially leaving you short on material mid-project.
One important note that is easy to overlook at the ordering stage: when calculating your Pre-Fill quantity, you must account for both the filling of BASWA panels and the filling of trims. These are two separate material demands, and the trim fill quantity is often underestimated.
BASWA Trims serve a structural and aesthetic purpose. They create the clean, defined edges required at terminations, transitions, and perimeters of the system. When trims are improperly installed, adhesion failures can occur, resulting in gaps that affect both the appearance of the finish coat and the acoustic continuity of the system. Only approved BASWA Trims are compatible with this installation method. Use of substitute trim profiles cannot be warrantied.

Only BASWA-specified trims are approved for use with BASWA Phon systems. Third-party or substitute trim profiles are not covered under warranty, and their dimensional tolerances may not allow for proper Pre-Fill coverage. If you are unsure which trim profile is correct for a given condition, consult the full BASWA Trims product line or contact your Contractor Sales representative before ordering.

Step 2: Cut to Length and Dry Fit
Cut each trim piece to the precise length required for the application area. Before applying any adhesive, dry fit the trim against the BASWA Phon supporting panel to confirm that the trim fully covers the panel edge. A trim that is even slightly short of full edge coverage will create a gap that Pre-Fill cannot reliably bridge. Confirm the fit before committing to adhesive.

Apply Trim-Tex 847 spray adhesive to both the substrate area that will receive the trim and the back face of the trim itself. Allow both surfaces to dry until they reach a tacky, not wet, condition before bringing them together. This is a contact adhesive, meaning it bonds on contact once tacky. Rushing this step and pressing the trim before the adhesive is ready will result in a weaker bond.
Coverage note: one can of Trim-Tex 847 spray adhesive will yield installation of 6 to 8 trim pieces. Trim-Tex 847 is the only spray adhesive approved for use by BASWA acoustic.

Once the adhesive has reached the tacky stage, press the trim firmly into its fitted position. Apply firm, even pressure along the full length of all trim edges to ensure complete contact with the supporting panel surface. Do not move on to the next area until you have confirmed that every edge of the trim is fully bonded. An edge that lifts even slightly at this stage will be difficult to correct after Pre-Fill is applied.

After the trim is fully secured, apply BASWA Pre-Fill to cover the entire exposed surface of the trim. The Pre-Fill creates the continuous, flush surface that Base and Fine finish materials require for proper adhesion and uniform appearance. Your Contractor Sales representative will confirm the Pre-Fill quantity needed based on your trim linear footage. Do not use substitute fillers, as they may affect finish adhesion and acoustical performance.
If a dark color finish is specified, the white vinyl trim surface can read through the finish coat as a lighter band along edges, particularly in raking light conditions. To prevent this, paint the exposed edges of the white vinyl trims with the matching trim paint available from BASWA acoustic before the finish coat is applied.
The correct sequence for this step is: wait until all areas are fully coated with a dry and sanded base coat, then apply the edge paint using a sponge brush, small roller, or paint sprayer. Mask off adjacent BASWA Base areas before painting to avoid getting paint on the acoustical surface, as coating the Base material can reduce its acoustical absorption performance.
Next Read: With your trims installed and filled, the next major quality control step before finish application is properly batching your Base and Fine finish materials for color consistency. See Guidelines for Properly Batching BASWA Base and Fine Materials to ensure your tinted finish goes on uniformly from the first bucket to the last.
