18,000 Square Feet of 70 mm BASWA Phon with Varying, Hand-troweled Rippled Custom Finish Acoustical Plaster on Sloped Dome Ceilings of Hotel Lobby

Acoustical Plaster in Casino and Hotel

In the lobby of Fontainebleau Las Vegas, custom-textured acoustical plaster shifts from one ceiling section to the next, like sand shaped by the tide.

Developed by Fontainebleau Development, with Bergman Walls & Associates as architect of record and design teams from Carlos Zapata Studio, David Collins Studio, Jeffrey Beers International, Lissoni & Partners, and Rockwell Group, the 67-story resort hotel and casino draws on the 1950s Fontainebleau Miami Beach through oceanic forms, materials, and patterns. The long-awaited project is the tallest occupiable building in Nevada, next to the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Fontainebleau Development commissioned original artwork from several artists to connect the Nevada desert with the ocean shoreline. The same organic, undulating forms carry into the architecture, including 18,000 square feet of acoustical plaster in the resort's lobby, developed by the design teams together with plaster artisans.

BASWA Installer KHS&S hand-crafted a custom texture and color into the curved BASWA Phon ceilings. The texture varies from section to section on purpose, forming rippled, sand-like patterns, like small dunes left by waves.

Fontainebleau Development made sustainability a design goal alongside the guest experience, so the lobby ceiling materials were chosen with care. The sound-absorbing BASWA Phon system keeps noise down in the lobby, so guests' first impression of the resort stays calm, with a textured marble finish overhead. BASWA Phon panels are made with at least 80 percent recycled glass, and the finish coat is 95 percent recycled marble aggregate left over from marble extraction. Across the full system, recycled content is 81 to 83 percent by weight.

Along with fine-tuning acoustics and positively impacting guest wellbeing, BASWA systems offer unlimited design options through texture and color. Global installations include multi-colored limestone, concrete, stucco, and split stone replications. Gradient colors can be acheived in a single seamless surface, on ceilings and walls. The cost for a custom acoustical plaster finish can be calculated in collaboration with the BASWA acoustic team and experienced BASWA Installer network. Custom mock ups and samples are also available to match your need.

After construction halted in mid-2009 and the project sat through a long pause, Fontainebleau Las Vegas Resort and Casino opened in December 2023.
