1,080 Square Feet of 70 mm BASWA Phon Classic Fine Seamless Acoustical Plaster Finish on Historically Preserved Ceilings of Meeting and Board Rooms

Ohio AIA Design Award

The Calfee, Halter & Griswold renovation of the East Ohio Gas Company Building, led by interior architect Vocon Inc. in coordination with historic restoration specialists Sandvick Architects, inserted a contemporary workplace within a historic shell. The two-story atrium posed a particular challenge that demanded historic preservation of the atrium's shell. Conference rooms with switchable-glass walls, café seating, an upper-level walkway, and a reception zone were planned within.

Thornton Acoustics, the project's acoustical consultant, was tasked with adding sound absorption without adding any visual character. Acoustical plaster, custom matched to the historic color pallet on the ceilings of the atrium walkway and adjacent meeting areas addressed sound absorption demands of a reverberant space.

The completed Building achieved LEED-CI Gold certification, the NAIOP Northern Ohio Interior Design of the Year Award for 2012, an Ohio AIA Design Award in 2013, and recognition as ENR Midwest's Best Restoration Project. The Cleveland Restoration Society honored the project with its Distinguished Restoration and Rehabilitation Award.
